© ChevelleWorld 1966 is the last model year to have two-tone seating in dark & medium shades.
© ChevelleWorld 1966 is the last model year to have different trim codes for the same color(s) for sedan pickups vs. sport coupes and convertibles; see 762 and 763.
© ChevelleWorld Beginning with the 1966 model year, bucket seats were an option under RPO A51. The SS 396 came standard with a bench seat offered in seven vinyl colors and optional bucket seats in six colors.
© ChevelleWorld All convertibles, station wagons, and sedan pickups came with all vinyl seats.
       
  The Atlanta, Flint, Framingham, and Kansas City assembly plants used -A or -B on their trim tag for bench or bucket seat even though the trim code is unique for each. When ordered with optional headrests, the -A or -B was changed to -S on those trim tags.

  (1) Trim code 729 is shown available for both the Malibu wagon and convertible as well as the SS 396 sport coupe and convertible. To date, no SS 396 series has been found with this two-tone combination bench seat.
    
  (2) Trim code 731 is shown available in both the SS 396 sport coupe and SS 396 convertible in Chevrolet parts manual as a two-tone combination but has not been seen in a two-tone combination in any SS 396 to date.
    
  (3) Trim code 777 does not appear in dealer sales books but does appear in the GM Trim Chart. None were reported in GM sales reports but I have identified at least 3 trim tags with the 777 trim code; one Fremont 13617, one Kansas City 13667 and one Kansas City 13817.

Aftermarket bucket seat trim kits often include a bright trim piece for the seat cushion side. These are NOT correct for Chevelles. Buicks, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac bucket seats got them but Chevelles did not.

A question often asked about is seat belts. All series and models, with the exception of the El Camino models came with front and rear seat belts. Standard belts have a black buckle while deluxe belts have a brushed aluminum buckle. Shown in the photo above with black bucket seats is the seat belt retractor that was part of the deluxe seat belt option.
