1972 Chevelle Production Numbers by Series/Model

The series and engine type (base I6 vs. base V8) are the 12nd & 3rd numbers and the model (body style) are the last two numbers. The first number shown in the 'Produced' column is domestic production, the second number is export production, and the total production is the last number.

The Series/Model columns correspond to VIN series & body style and not Fisher Body plate Style numbers.

Notes/Caveats:
(1) The total production according to the reported last VIN of each assembly plant totals 649,269 and does not match figures above.
(2) There were 24,946 Malibu/El Camino (Custom) series was equipped with RPO Z15 SS option and, of these, 5,333 were equipped with SS454 equipment; the remainder were I65, L48, and LS3 engines.
(3) There were 9,508 standard Chevelles ordered with the Heavy Chevy option.
(4) n/a indicates the series/model was not available with that engine type.
(5) There were 20,031 LS3 (402-cid) engines optioned in 1972.
(6) Of the 2,888 13437 Chevelle sport coupes imported from Canada, 1,151 were optioned with YF3.
(7) Of the 21,106 13637 Malibu sport coupes imported from Canada, 1,542 were optioned with Z15.
(8) Of the 21,106 13637 Malibu sport coupes imported from Canada, 266 were optioned with the LS5.
(9) Of the 21,106 13637 Malibu sport coupes imported from Canada, 149 were optioned with the M22 and 117 were optioned with the M40.
(10) GM of Canada reports 3,817 13437 sport coupes were built for sale in Canada; 870 with YF3 option while GM of Canada reports 2,888 13437 sport coupes were built for sale in the U.S.; 1,151 with YF3 option.

Note: On all eight cylinder models, the "x" represents one of five 8-cylinder engines available in 1972. Engine designations are "F" for 307-2, "H" for 350-2, "J" for 350-4, "U" for 402-2. and "W" for 454-4.

VIN search disclaimer This Chevelle website is not designed to help you locate a car you owned 20-30 years ago. To my knowledge there is no known database of a car's VIN and its past/current owner. Such a public database would be a gross invasion of privacy. Law enforment agencies can run a VIN in most cases to find the current owner but can only do so legally as part of any police action such as a suspected stolen car or one that has been in an accident to verify the owner.
