Chevy II/Nova ] The Camaro version of the SS began with the 1967 model year and continued through the 1971 model year.. 1967:
The Super Sport for 1967 was a performance option with a louvered SS hood, SS nose stripe and badging. The SS base engine was the 295 horsepower 350 cubic inch engine. The 396 cubic inch engine rated at 325 horsepower and the 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch engines were available in mid year. Initially SS350 emblems were used until the availability of the 396 then the badging was changed to simply SS.
1968:
For 1968 the Super Sport retained the same 295hp 350 cubic inch engine as its base engine. Both the 350 horsepower and 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch engines were options. The early SS came with the RPO D91 "Bumble Bee" stripe (shown below) and in January of 1968 the RPO D90 stripe replaced the D91 stripe.

1969:
For 1969 the 325 horsepower 396 cubic inch engine was available along with the base 350 (now rated at 300 horsepower), the 350 and 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch engines were also optional. The now infamous Hugger Orange paint color was finally a factory color. The SS option finally got a regular production option (RPO) number, RPO Z27.
1970:
The 1970 model year introduction was delayed until February 1970 due to production issues. Essentially the same engines offered in 1969 were offered in 1970 with the 396 cubic inch engine now displacing 402 cubic inches although still marketed as a 396. The convertible body style was dropped in 1970.
1971:
Like all other Chevrolets in GM's lineup the engine horsepower ratings were now advertised as net horsepower instead of gross horsepower and all horsepower ratings were down from 1970. The 350 cubic inch engine was now rated at 270 gross and 210 net. The only 396/402 cubic inch engine was now the LS3 rated at 260 net horsepower.
1972:The 1972 model year would be the last year for the SS Equipment option for the Camaro. The SS option included the 200hp RPO L48 350 cid engine. A 240hp 402cid engine was optional under RPO LS3 but this engine was not available in California. The LS3 engine option also included sport suspension and black-finished rear panel.
