Chevy II/Nova's Super Sport Story

1963:


The Chevy II/Nova version of the SS was introduced in its second production year, 1963, and 1963 is the only year a convertible was offered with the SS option. Performance wasn't on the menu for the 1963 SS Nova but the option did include emblems, bucket seats, and a floor shifted transmission.

 1964-1965:


The 1964 model year saw the introduction of the first V8 in a Chevy II/Nova. The 283cid, 195hp 'mouse' motor wasn't a stump puller but it added a needed punch to the lightweight Chevy II/Nova lineup. A 220hp version of the 283 engine were built for service conversion but may have been factory installed in late 1964. The V8 engines were available in any body style/model in 1963 and 25,083 of them were sold. Just how many went into the 10,576 SS sport coupes is not known.

The 327cid V8 engine was available in the 1965 model year in two versions; the L30 with a 250hp rating and the L74 with a 300hp rating.

1966-1967:


A major styling change was in order for 1966 and minor updates for 1967. No less than four V8 engines were available; the base 283cid 195hp V8, a 4-barrel version of the 283cid engine rated at 220hp (RPO L77) and two 327cid V8 engines rated at 275hp (RPO L30) and a whopping 350hp (RPO L79) - 5,481 of these L79 engines found their way into owner's garages but this number dropped only 6 in 1967. It is not know how many of any engine were installed in the 20,986 1966 SS optioned Chevy II/Novas or the10,069 1967 SS optioned Chevy II/Novas.

1968-1969-1970:


A third major styling change came in 1968 and the "Chevy II" name was dropped in 1969 in favor of just "Nova." Five V8 engines were on the options chart for 1968. The base V8 engine was now the 307cid, 200hp V8 with two 327cid engines, the 275hp (RPO L30) and 325hp (RPO L79 - rating drop from 1966/1067), and two, new for 1968, 396cid engines rated at 350hp (RPO L34) and 375hp (RPOL78).

The 1969 and 1970 model years saw a few cosmetic changes but a greater V8 engine selection. The 327cid engine was dropped in favor of the new 350cid V8 and offered in three hp ratings, 250hp (RPO L65), 255hp (RPO LM1 - dropped for 1970) and 300hp (RPO L48). The two 396cid engines remained the same, 350hp (RPO L34) and 375hp (RPO L78). The heavy duty TH400 3-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission saw its first use in the Nova but only behind the two 396 engines. A new TH350  3-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission saw its first use in the Nova behind the other engines in 1969.

1971-1978:


With insurance companies pinging high horsepower car owners and the government regulations on air pollution control the Nova began to take a big hit. The Nova suffered like other GM, Ford, and MO Par models and the Nova was finally put to rest in 1978.
