Chevy II/Nova ] Arguably the Chevrolet "Super Sport" brand is one of the most successful and recognizable marketing schemes to ever come out of Detroit. The Super Sport identification has been applied to full size models, Chevy II/Nova models, Chevelle models, Camaro models, and even the HHR in various forms since 1961. Sometimes the Super Sport was just an option and sometimes its own series within a particular Chevrolet model. Sometimes it was a performance option, sometimes just a dress-up option. The first Chevrolet to use the "Super Sport" nameplate was actually a 1957 Corvette built for the GM Motorama and shown at the Waldorf Astoria in New York and the Chicago Auto Show. The car featured Chevrolet's new 283/283 fuel injected engine, custom pearl white paint and blue leather interior. Another 1957 Corvette used the "SS" nameplate and was a magnesium-bodied experimental race car/concept car. Only two were built, one raced and one as a test mule. Sadly, since the U.S. auto makers united to ban the manufacture of factory race cars the plans were scrapped. This ban did not stop factory support for various kinds of racing though, it flourished in numerous racing endeavors, be it drag racing, stock car racing, Trans Am, etc. |
