(1) Note: For what it's worth, ALL 1967 rear ends I've ever seen were the narrow variety and used the spring cup like 1968-1972 but were narrower like the 1964-1966. I do have photos of a June 1967 cast #3917124 rear end but the assembly date is October - obviously for a 1968 model year Chevelle. However, a June 1967 casting date rear end such as this might have found its way into very late 1967 model year Chevelles as well and could be the basis for the statement in an article from Car Craft magazine some years ago titled "Inside 64-72 A-Bodies".

Three different 396 cid engines were available, the 325-hp (RPO L35), 350-hp (RPO L34) and 375-hp (RPO L78)

See the engines page for engine/transmission breakdown.

Transmission

The 1967 SS 396 came standard with a floor-shifted manual 3-speed transmission. Three optional Muncie 4-speed manual transmissions were available, a wide ratio (RPO M20), a close ratio (RPO M21), and the heavy duty close ratio (RPO M22). The 2-speed Powerglide or 3-speed TH-400 automatic transmission could be ordered behind either the base 325 hp engine or the optional 350-hp engine. The L78 engine required a manual transmission.
