The 1958 model year was a completely redesigned model and a one-year only design. A new "X" frame was utilized and often criticized as not having sufficient side impact protection. In spite of this, the "X" frame was used through the 1964 model year.

A new 348cid engine was available for the first time in 1958 and could be ordered in any V8 series Chevrolet with a 4-bbl carburetor or with a 3x2-bbl carburetor arrangement in three horsepower ratings, 250/280/315, depending on the carburetion and transmission type.

The Impala ws available in both a sport coupe and convertible body style. Based on the Bel Air and featured a special faux vent on the rear of the reshaped roof, unique side trim, and three tail lamps on each side.

Fuel injection was still available on the venerable 283cid engine in 250hp or 290hp versions.

The 150 series nameplate was replaced with "Delray," the 210 nameplate was replaced with "Biscayne." Station wagon series' were the entry level "Yeoman," mid-level "Brookwood," and "Nomad." Sadly, the upscale Bel Air Nomad was no longer available.

Electric windshield wipers were standard on V8 models but still optional under RPO 320 on L6 models.
