In 1961 the SS, or Super Sport, option was born. The "SS" moniker would become a staple of Chevrolets through 1987 in the El Camino lineup. For more details on the SS option, see my Impala SS Registry links page at http://impalass.macswebs.com/faq/faq.html

The Impala was restyled again for 1961. Sport coupe models featured a new roofline often referred to as a "bubble top."

New for 1961 was the 409cid V8 engine with horsepower ratings of 305hp with Powerglide and 360hp with a manual transmission. The new 409cid engine could be ordered in any Chevrolet V8 series.
