The all new 1984 Corvette is a complete redesign in almost every aspect from the 1982 model year. The 1984 Corvette was introduced in March of 1983 and since it met all 1984 federal requirements, Chevrolet decided to skip the 1983 model year designation resulting in a very long model year production run and the second highest volume in the Corvette's history and GM missed a golden opportunity for a 30th Anniversary Edition. Sixty-one 1983 models were built, sequenced numbered, and tested by both Chevrolet and the motoring press but those 1983 Corvette's were not released for public sale. A total of 61 serial numbered 1983 Corvettes were built; 18 were prototypes and 43 were pilot-line cars that were built but never released to the public for sale. The National Corvette Museum did manage to snag the only surviving 1983 Corvette, VIN number 1G1AY0783D5110023.
The base Corvette featured a 350cid 205hp engine with Cross-Fire fuel injection, 4-speed automatic transmission, removable body-color roof panel, and cloth seats.
Only coupes with body-color removeable top were available, no convertibles for 1984.
C4 Corvettes featured a Doug Nash 4+3 4-speed manual transmission with the top three gears having overdrive.
