Camaro SS (1967-1973) Chevelle SS396/SS454/Malibu SS (1964-1973) Chevy II/Nova SS (1962-1973) Full-size Passenger Car SS (1961-1969) The first SS option was available in 1963 under RPO Z03 and featured special Nova SS emblems, wheel covers, side moldings, bucket seats, and floor-shifted transmission controls. The SS option was limited to the sport coupe and convertible. The option continued for the 1964 model year.
For 1965 through 1967 the Nova SS was its own model with either "17" (L6 engine) or "18" (V8 engine) as the second and third digits of the VIN.
The 1968 through 1971 model years, an SS returned as an option. It is almost impossible to verify a 1968 Nova with the SS option without some sort of paperwork showing the option or an original engine. The 1968 Nova SS option did include the 295hp 350cid engine along with two versions of the 396cid engine.
The 1969 through 1971 Nova SS can be identified by the SS option (RPO Z26) on appropriate paperwork.
The 1972 model year Nova SS could be identified by the engine code in the VIN with the letter "K" signifying the 350cid engine (RPO L48).
