Camaro SS (1967-1973)
Chevelle SS396/SS454/Malibu SS (1964-1973)
Chevy II/Nova SS (1962-1973)
Full-size Passenger Car SS (1961-1969)

The first SS option was with the 1961 model year under RPO 240 available with the sport coupe or convertible. You would need some kind of original paperwork showing the RPO 240 option and only the sport coupe or convertible received the option. Only 142 of the 360hp 409 cid engines were sold in 1961, the remainder were one of the following: 305hp 348 cid engine 340hp 348 cid engine, or 350hp 348 cid engine. The Super Sport option mandated either the 348 or 409 engine along with heavier springs, heavy duty shocks, power steering, power brakes with sintered metallic brake linings, and 8.00 x 14 whitewall tires on steel black painter 14 x 5 wheels. All had what is commonly referred to as a Sun "3-piece" tachometer (tachometer, chrome cup, and sending unit) on the steering column with remote sending unit mounted on the driver side fender in the engine compartment. The 1961 SS option also included SS emblems on the trunk and quarter panel, 3-bar spinner wheel covers, padded dash and a passenger side grab bar. If you suspect a fake, check the mounting holes for the grab bar. The factory mounting holes are oval, not round. Also the wheel covers did not have a mounting hole for the standard plastic emblem.

The trim of the 1962 Impala SS was different from the standard Impala. The Impala SS came with bucket seats and all vinyl interiors. Trim codes for the 1962 Impala SS were unique to the SS. Any engine could be ordered in a 1962 Super Sport, L6 or V8. All 327cid and 409cid engines came with tachometer but a tachometer could be ordered with any V8 engine as an option under RPO 331

The Super Sport option for 1963 is RPO Z03. Like the 1962 model year codes for the Impala SS were unique to the SS. The Super Sport option added some dress-up items such as engine-turned exterior trim, SS badging, and SS wheel covers. SS sport coupes were equipped with 7.00 x 14 tires and convertibles with 7.50 x 14 tires.

Like the 1962 and 1963 model years codes for the 1964 Impala SS interior codes were unique to the SS. Unlike 1962 or 1963 both the convertible and sport coupe used the same bucket seat code.

Like the 1962 through 1964 model years codes for the Impala SS were unique to the SS. Like 1964 both the convertible and sport coupe used the same bucket seat code.

The VIN of a 1965 Impala SS is different than non-SS Impalas. The second and third digits should be "65" or "66" where "65" is for a 6-cylinder Impala SS and "66" is a V8 Impala SS.

The VIN of the 1966 and 1967 Impala SS begins with 16737/16837 for sport coupe or 16767/16867 for convertible where "16737" and 16767" are for 6-cylinder Impala SSs and "16837" and "16867" are for V8 Impala SSs.

For the 1968 model year two SS options were offered, RPO Z03 for the Super Sport (36,432 sold) and RPO Z24 for the SS427 (1,778 sold). RPO Z03 and RPO Z24 could be ordered with the 16447 Custom Coupe, 16467 Convertible, or 16487 Sport Coupe body style.

Only the RPO Z24 SS427 was available in 1969 with VINs 16437 Sport Coupe, 16447 Custom Coupe, and 16467 Convertible with sales of 2,445 but no breakdown of SS427 options for any of the three body styles.
