Sway Bar Restoration
Proceed to restore the front and rear sway bars. These should be treated much the same as the other suspension pieces. Completely strip them of all rust, grime, paint, etc. and acid wash to get them clean or at the very least use a solvent that leaves no film. From there they can be primed and painted. These were produced in both natural or black painted from the factory and you must decide which color to paint yours, either a semi gloss black or cast iron color. Painting them a natural color will give your suspension a bit of contrast.
The same goes for the front sway bar brackets as both natural steel and black painted clamps have been found. For the natural steel look use stainless steel colored paint or strip your originals and seal them with a quality bare steel sealer such as Boe-Shield. Keep in mind if yours are pitted then body filling and painting may be the suggested manner as the pits will be very evident if leaving natural. The sway bar stand offs or towers as they are often called can be sealed with Boe-Shield to keep them from flash corroding and left natural.
With your completed suspension restoration, you have a very
nicely detailed and correct-appearing chassis with minimal expense
and lots of elbow grease. This detailing is the difference between a
nicely restored car and a wannable.
