1969 SS396 Option - RPO Z25

1969 SS396

In 1969 the SS396 as a series was gone. The SS396 was now an option under RPO Z25 - SS396 Equipment. Still available in the Malibu series sport coupe, convertible, and El Camino, 1969 also offered the Z25 option with the 300 Deluxe coupe and sport coupe as well.

Bench seats were still standard equipment along with a heavy duty 3-speed manual floor-shifted transmission. Optional were several 4-speed manual transmissions and the 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission. The 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission was no longer available with the SS396 Equipment option. For the first time, power front disc brakes were included in the SS396 Equipment option package along with SS396-only 14x7 wheels.

Bucket seats and gauges/tachometer were options, even on the SS396 but bucket seats were not an option in the 300 Deluxe series, even with the SS396 option.

Two new colors were optional for any SS396, Hugger Orange and Daytona Yellow. Although these two colors were unique to the SS396 series(1), there were still a $42.15 option. The SS396 Equipment option could be ordered in any available color, these two were just limited to the SS396.

For the first, and only time, the SS396 option was available with the 300 Deluxe series pillared coupe (13427) and the 300 Deluxe sport coupe (13437). Since the 300 Deluxe series did not offer bucket seats as an option, the SS396-optioned 300 Deluxe did not change this, bucket seats could NOT be ordered with the 300 Deluxe series with the sS396 option.

When the SS396 option was ordered in the Malibu series, the front fenders were 300 Deluxe units with the small amber side marker, the SS396 emblem, but without the lower bright trim found on the standard Malibu and when ordered in the 300 Deluxe series the Malibu tail lamp assemblies were used.

Aluminum cylinder heads were first offered with the L78 engine with 400 units being sold under RPO L89. Although the L89 option did not result in an increase of the L78's 375hp but did remove about 200 pounds from the front half of the car.
