All 1964 Chevelle station wagons and sedan pickups have vented gas caps, all others have non-vented gas caps.
The 1964 Chevelle was the only year the U.S. VIN began with the year
(4). GM of Canada would keep the year first through 1966.
The Malibu SS was its own series and could be ordered with any I6 or V8 engine available in a Chevelle.
The Malibu SS came standard with its own wheel cover that was not an option on any other 1964 Chevelle.

(1) The Chevrolet parts book, circa 1972, shows a single service part for 1964 & 1965 hub cap #3840899. It has been suggested that the two years have different size ribs. Image shown is 1965 hub cap. |
Any radio was an option. When no radio was ordered, a radio hole cover
plate was used on the dash to cover the radio hole. Often erroneously
referred to as a "radio delete" plate but you cannot "delete"
what you do not order.
Note the small trim piece below the ignition switch. This was to help
prevent scratches on the dash caused by multiple keys chain.
All Malibu SS models have gauges instead of warning lamps. A clock
was also a standard item with the Malibu SS and optional on all
other Malibus. Gauges were not an option in 1964 but a tachometer
was and a tachometer could be ordered in any model/series and any
engine.
When a tachometer was ordered it occupied the center round hole in
the dash between the speedometer and gauges/warning lamps. If an
electric clock was also ordered, or with a Malibu SS, the clock was
moved to the top center of the dash.
A 327cid engine was made available in March of 1964 with a 250hp rating under RPO L30. In June of 1964 a second 327cid engine was offered with 300hp under RPO L74. See engine id codes for more information.
The Malibu convertible and all sedan pickup bench seats were all vinyl.
The Malibu SS sport coupe and convertible bucket seats were all vinyl. Neither the sport coupe nor the convertible Malibu SS came standard with a center console. A console was only added when an optional transmission (Powerglide automatic or Muncie 4-speed) were ordered.
