All 1965 Chevelle station wagons and sedan pickups have vented gas caps, all others have non-vented gas caps.
The 1965 Chevelle changed the U.S. VIN format to indicate the year as the 3rd digit. This format would run through the 1971 model year. GM of Canada would keep the year first through 1966.
A new series was introduced, the 300 Deluxe to fill a gap between the 300 and Malibu series. See model_id for more.
The Malibu SS was its own series and could be ordered with any I6 or V8 engine available in a Chevelle.
The Malibu SS came standard with its own wheel cover that was not an option on any other 1965 Chevelle.

(1) The Chevrolet parts book, circa
1972, shows a single service part for 1964 & 1965 hub cap
#3840899. It has been suggested that the two years have different
size ribs. Image shown is 1965 hub cap. (2) The 'Mag-style' wheel cover was the standard wheel cover for RPO Z16 Chevelles. The wheel cover was not available as an option on any other 1965 Chevelle. It would become an option for 1966-1968 Chevelles. |
A 327cid engine was made available in 1965 with a 350hp rating under RPO L79. See engine id codes for more information.
All vinyl bucket seats were standard interior seats for the Malibu SS. However,
a console (not available separately as an option) was only installed
when an optional transmission was ordered. With no optional transmission
ordered, the standard 3-speed transmission was column-shifted.
Like the 1964 model year, all Malibu SS models have gauges instead
of warning lamps. A clock was also a standard item with the Malibu
SS and optional on all other Malibus. Gauges were not an option in
1965 but a tachometer was and a tachometer could be ordered in any
model/series and any engine. When a tachometer was ordered it
occupied the center round hole in the dash between the speedometer
and gauges/warning lamps. If an electric clock was also ordered, or
with a Malibu SS, the clock was moved to the top center of the dash.
The Malibu convertible and all sedan pickup bench seats were all vinyl.
