The final year for the C3 Corvette. Several "firsts" went along with the last year of this body style that has been around since the 1968 model year. No manual transmission Corvettes were built in 1982, a first since 1955. A new "CrossFire" fuel injection was introduced, no 1982 Corvette engines were fueled by carburetors.
To honor the 1982 model's special status, Chevrolet offered a "Collector Edition." It differed from the base model in several ways. A higher level of standard features that were optional on the base model. The Collector Edition has a lifting rear hatchback glass for access to the rear storage area, special wheels, unique silver and beige paint, and silver and beige leather seats. The Collector Edition Hatchback Coupe carried a special code in the VIN (a zero in the sixth position) but was sequenced along with the other 1982 Corvettes. At $22,537.59, it was the first Corvette with a base price over $20,000.00. All 1982 Corvettes were equipped with air conditioning, power steering, power windows, power 4-wheel disc brakes, and much more as standard equipment.
Although there were no manual transmissions available for 1982 Corvettes the new automatic was a four-speed unit with a torque converter clutch for the top three gears. Designated the 700-R4 the new automatic transmission was basically the 3-speed Turbo-HydraMatic with an overdrive fourth gear. A new Cross-Fire fuel injection was used this year. Unlike the fuel injection of 1957-1965 Corvettes, this was all electronic with two injectors and Chevrolet's Command Control that was capable of making 80 adjustments per second. All 1982 and future Corvettes were built at the Bowling Green facility. The 1982 model year was the last model with optional radio packages that included an 8-track tape (RPO UM4) and CB radio (RPO UN5).
Strangely enough, the 1982 model year was projected to be the introductory year for the "new" C4 style Corvette. The new Corvette assembly plant was ready for production in 1981 in preparation for the new fourth-generation Corvette. The new C4 was pushed back to the fall of 1982 as a 1983 model. A number of delays caused the "1983" Corvette to become the 1984 Corvette. Only one 1983 Corvette survived the 43 initial pilot cars and is on display at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
