Introduction - 1972

The 1972 model year saw only minor body changes, mainly in the front sheet metal. The 1971 front park/turn signal lamps eliminated the horizontal center bar and the center bright bar was removed from the grille.

Engine advertised horsepower ratings were 'down' primarily due to the change in the way the horsepower was obtained. Prior years advertised gross horsepower ratings but 1972 saw the ratings as net with all accessories connected. It is pretty certain the rising of insurance rates based on the car's horsepower had something to do with it as well.

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) also underwent a major change in 1972 Chevelles. The particular engine size was now noted in the VIN with a letter. See Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) - 1972 for breakdown. While the format of the VIN changed, the Fisher Body style number did not. For example a Fisher Body number of 13637 was still used for a V8 Malibu sport coupe but the corresponding VIN change to 1D37.

Both bench and bucket seats now carried the same 3-digit trim code number. A bench seat car will have A52 after the code where a bucket seat car will have A51 after the code. See Interior Trim Codes - 1972 for breakdown.

The Heavy Chevy option continued for 1972 under RPO YF3 with the same engine options/restrictions as 1971 and production was up to 9,508 units being ordered.

For 1972, the Monte Carlo SS was no longer an option. Instead a Monte Carlo Custom (RPO Z03) was offered by Chevrolet that included belt moldings; L.H. remote-control sport mirror; custom wheel covers; custom nameplate; special acoustical package; ashtray, courtesy, luggage compartment, mirror map light, and underhood lights; special front and rear suspension; G70-15 blackwall tires and 15 x 7 wheels.
