The 1967 model year saw the second year of the SS 396 series. The Mark IV 396 cid engine was still available in the Chevelle SS 396 to anyone with the moxie to order one. The base 396 engine (RPO L35) was factory rated at 325 hp with an optional (RPO L34) 350 hp version and a solid lifter monster (RPO L78) rated at 375 hp. Initially the L78 was dropped from the engine lineup but reinstated later in the year with little to no fanfare which accounts for its low sales of just 612 units. The L79 engine was reinstated in the Chevelle lineup but horsepower rating was cut from 350 hp to 325 hp. Although not an SS 396, both V8 El Camino series (13480 & 13680) could order any one of the three 396 engines as well.
The 1967 Chevelle was offered in 15 various series/body style combinations with a choice of two 6-cylinder engines or choice of six 8-cylinder engines. New for the 1967 model year was the introduction of the Concours series station wagon. A buyer had a total of 15 solid paint colors and seven two-tone paint schemes to choose from. Color choices were limited somewhat by the body style; convertibles with a soft top were not considered a two-tone, sedan pickups and station wagons were limited to solid paint colors only. Like 1966 there were no SS 396-specific paint colors - all colors were available on all series and body styles with one exception; the Concours station wagon was not available in Marina Blue for some reason.
The SS 396 was not the only 1967 Chevelle to have its VIN begin with
"138." The Concours station wagon could be had with any L6 or 283/327
engine and its VIN began with either "137" (L6) or "138" (V8).
