As you can see in the matrices below, the 2-speed Powerglide, the 3-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic M38 and M40 automatic transmission, and several versions of the manual 3-speed transmissions were used based on the particular engine and its horsepower rating. The matrix represents the gear ratio multiplication factor based on the gear set in the transmission and the rear end axle ratio. The manual 4-speed transmission was available in four versions, a wide ratio cast iron case Saginaw M20, an aluminum case Muncie M20 and close ratio heavy duty M22.
