Identification tag
A small metal tag is affixed to the passenger side of the transmission just above the pan rail. This identified the model year, engine type, date, and transmission serial number. All TH400 transmission dates are counted from January 1 of the previous calendar year. For example a Julian date of 441 on a 1970 Chevelle TH400 is counted as 441 from January 1, 1969 - or March 17, 1970. A Julian date of 281 would be October 8, 1969.

Oil Pan
Early 1967 Chevelle TH400 oil pans had a unique heel mark, a bump, and
3 dimples.
According to a Chevrolet Service News Bulletin around July of 1967 saw
a change in the TH400 oil pan; the heel mark, bump, and 1 of the dimples
was gone.
