Valve Lash Adjustment

Setting the valves w/o engine running (hydraulic lifters)
With #1 at TDC ~ Intake 1 2 5 7 ~~ Exhaust 1 3 4 8
With #6 at TDC ~ Intake 3 4 6 8 ~~ Exhaust 2 5 6 7

Setting the valves with engine running ~ warm ~ hydraulic lifters
Back off each rocker arm until it just begins to clatter. Tighten until the clatter stops. Tighten additional 1/4 turn and wait 5-15 seconds; tighten an additional 1/4 turn.

Setting the valves w/o engine running (mechanical lifters)
With #1 at TDC ~ Intake 2 7 ~~ Exhaust 4 8
Rotate crankshaft 1/2 turn ~ Intake 1 8 ~~ Exhaust 3 6
With #6 at TDC ~ Intake 3 4 ~~ Exhaust 5 7
Rotate crankshaft 1/2 turn ~ Intake 5 6 ~~ Exhaust 1 2

    3/4" Heater hose from water pump (return line) to top of heater box

    5/8" Heater hose from intake (pressure line) to bottom of heater box
    3/4" Heater hose from water pump (return line) to top of heater box

Notes:
1. Water pumps by Tuffstuff (and sold by Summit Racing) for the 396/454 have a 1 3/4" lower outlet ~ same as the lower radiator inlet.
2. Vintage Air Sure Fit A/C uses 5/8" for both heater hoses.
