Casting Number | Engine Size | Engine Horsepower | Main Caps/Information |
3892657 | 327 | 275 - 325 | 2-bolt main bearing caps. Used for most 1967 327 applications |
3896944 | 283 | 195 | 2-bolt main bearing caps. Tonawanda cast block |
3896948 | 283 | 195 | 2-bolt main bearing caps. Flint cast block |

3902406 | 396 | 325 - 350 375 |
2-bolt 4-bolt Used for late 1966 and 1967 years only due to change in oil galleys. Second design 396, no dowel pin on timing cover and last year to have this timing cover design and canister type oil filter. Casting date is located on the right lower side of the block near the freeze plug. this block also has the tall tower distributor casting boss in the lifter gallery. |
3916323 | 396 | 325 - 350 375 |
2-bolt 4-bolt Used from June of 1967 to June of 1968. First block to use spin-on filter in place of canister filters used in early Mark IV engines and reported to have been used in very late (June/July/August) 1967 Chevelles. |

The Saginaw foundry casting clock is approximately 2-inches in diameter and is usually found on the rear of the block by the casting number. The clock has 10 dots representing an hour of a shift. The second dot outside the circle indicates the start of a ten-hour shift. The Saginaw foundry usually ran two ten-hour shifts, 7:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 4:00 P.M. to midnight. Parts cast at the beginning of the shift would have the pointer pointing to the double-dot position as shown in the photo. Every hour the pointer would be moved clockwise to indicate the hour. The slot in the pointer indicates the shift. A flat, slotted head indicates the first shift, the second shift has a round head in the pointer. This pointer indicates this block was cast first hour of the first shift, or 7:00 to 8:00 A.M. |
|
Note the difference in the Tonawanda foundry casting clock. This clock has 11 dots plus the number 12. The pointer indicates this block was cast in the 8th hour of the shift. |
Block casting 3902406 ~ 396 2-bolt (325hp/350hp) or 4-bolt (375hp) main caps.
The letter "P" reportedly indicates the block was destined for passenger car and
not a truck but no Chevrolet documentation has been discovered yet to support
this.
Block casting 3892657 ~ 327 (275/325hp) 2-bolt main caps. Also used on 1967 302
and 350 Camaros.
Casting date F 16 6 ~ June 16, 1966 ~ located below center freeze plug on passenger
side of 396 engine.
Casting date A287 ~ January 28, 1967 ~ located on the bell housing flange on the
passenger side of 283/327 engine.
1967 was the last year of the oil canister and replacement filter on both 396
(left) and 283/327 (right) engines.
Beginning with the 1968 model year a spin-on replacement oil filter was used.
The canister itself was satin black with silk screened maintenance instructions
in white.
Silk-screened maintenance instructions.
Center bolt marking.
Note the size of fittings next to the oil filter on this 3902406 4-bolt main block.
On 4-bolt main bearing blocks the front hole (next to freeze plug in this photo)
is drilled 1/2" pipe thread and is drilled and tapped into the oil galley. The
center hole is drilled and tapped a 3/4" pipe thread into the oil galley. The
rear hole above the oil filter with the machined face has a 1/2" USS coarse-thread
hole and is not drilled into the oil galley and is used to mount the pivot ball
for the manual transmission clutch release cross-shaft.
On 2-bolt main bearing blocks the front hole is drilled 5/16" and is not drilled or tapped into the oil galley. The center hole is drilled and tapped a 3/8" pipe thread into the oil galley. The rear hole above the oil filter has a 1/2" USS coarse-thread hole and is not drilled into the oil galley.
Also note the casting "HIPERF" and "PASS". All 1965-1991 Gen IV big block engines have some form of "HIPERF", "HIPER", "TRUCK", "PASS", etc. These cast words have no bearing on whether the block was destined for a passenger car or truck and have no bearing on what horsepower the engines would eventually be built to. This example happens to be a 4-bolt block but the "HIPERF" casting has bearing on this.
