Each year of Chevelles from 1964 through 1972 had unique oddities associated with
them. 1964 | 1965 | 1966 | 1967 | 1968 | 1969 | 1970 | 1971 | 1972 → 1965 * The model year digit was moved to the 6th position in the VIN for U.S.-built Chevelles such as 138375K123456. * Malibu SS was it's own series, not an optional upgrade to the Malibu. * Malibu SS could be ordered with any available engine, L6 or V8. * Malibu SS came standard with bucket seats and gauges but tachometer was optional when a V8 was ordered. * Malibu SS came standard with full wheel covers with an "SS" emblem in the center. Other wheel covers were an option. * A center console was not an option in any series but if a Malibu SS was ordered with either the optional Powerglide or 4-speed, a console was included. * While bucket seats were not an option as such, several colors of bucket seats were available in the sedan pickup series but only as a trim option, not a bucket seat option. * Three paint colors were now exclusive to the Malibu SS series; Evening Orchid, Glacier Gray, and Crocus Yellow. * Several body styles were built at the Euclid, OH. Fisher Body plant and shipped to several final assembly plants for completion. These can be identified by the Fisher Body plant identification of "EUC" on the Fisher Body Number plate. The final assembly plant is typically a single letter above the paint code such as "B" for Baltimore and "K" for Kansas City. * Front seat belts could be deleted under RPO A62 (29,864 reported). * Rear seat belts were optional as of March 1965 (820 reported). * 283 and 327 V8 equipped Chevelles have "crossed flags" emblem on the front fenders with the engine size noted above the emblem. The base L6 engine had no emblems while the optional L6 had an engine size designation emblem. * Malibu SS now sported a blacked-out grille and headlamp bezels along with blacked out trim on the rear tail panel; black Malibu SS were painted silver and many Danube Blue Malibu SS owners assert theirs were also done in silver. There is no documentation from GM to date to confirm this but it does make sense on a dark car. * The 2-door station wagon was offered only in the base Chevelle 300 series and 1965 would be the last year for this particular 2-door station wagon body style. ** If you have some to add or question anything listed, contact me here. |
