Each year of Chevelles from 1964 through 1972
had unique oddities associated with them. 1964 | 1965 | 1966 | 1967 | 1968 | 1969 | 1970 | 1971 | 1972 → 1972 * General Motors changed their schema for VINs. The series, such as Malibu, changed from the number "36" to the letter "D," "B" for the Nomad wagon, "C" for the base Chevelle and Greenbrier wagon, and "H" for the Monte Carlo. For the first time the particular engine size/hp rating was incorporated into the VIN; "D" for the L6, "F" for the 307cid V8, "H" for the 350-2cid V8, "J" for the 350-4cid V8, "U" for the 402cid V8, and "W" for the 454cid V8. * Fisher Body did not follow suit for their style schema. Fisher Body Number plates still show 13637 for a V8 Malibu sport coupe where GM's VIN would code it as 1D37. * Relatively few changes occurred for 1972. The front parking lamps were changed from 2 visible lamps to a single lamp. There is also minor grille and headlamp extension changes for 1972. * All engines were now rated via the third party Standard of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standards resulting in lower advertised horsepower ratings. * Interior trim codes no longer differ between bench and bucket seats. Now the trim tag will show "A52" for a bench seat or "A51" for bucket seats. * Tuxedo Black was not an normal color selection for 1972 although it could be special ordered via the Fleet & Special Order (F&SO) process under RPO ZP3 "Special Paint." ** If you have some to add or question anything listed, contact me here. |
