Each year of Chevelles from 1964 through 1972 had unique oddities associated with them.

1964 | 1965 | 1966 | 1967 | 1968 | 1969 | 1970 | 1971 | 1972

→ 1969

* The SS 396 as a series is discontinued; it now became an option under RPO Z25 for the Malibu sport coupe, convertible, and sedan pickup. For 1969 only, the SS 396 option is also available with the 13427 and 13437 300 Deluxe coupe and sport coupe.

* The SS 396 Equipment option included the 325hp 396cid engine, bright engine accents (air cleaner lid and rocker arm covers), power disc brakes, floor-mounted special 3-speed manual transmission, dual exhaust, black painted grille and rear panel, wheel opening moldings, special hood ornamentation and suspension, 14 x 7 SS wheels and F70-14 white lettered blackwall tires. The 300 Deluxe models included the Malibu-style tail lamps. The Malibu SS 396 optioned Chevelles used the 300 Deluxe front fenders with the smaller side lamp and no lower body bright trim.

* No wheel covers were available when the SS 396 option was ordered and the special 14x7 SS wheels were not optional on any other model.

* Optional aluminum cylinder heads could be ordered if the L78 engine was ordered under RPO L89 (400 reported). There is no L89 engine as such, just the L78 engine with optional L89 aluminum cylinder heads.

* The 327cid engine was replaced with a 350cid engine.

* Headrests became standard on January 1, 1969. Prior to January 1, headrests were installed as an 'option' under RPO A82 at a cost of either $16.80 (window sticker from Fremont) to $17.25 shown on a Fremont dealer's invoice for an El Camino from General Motors. If the customer knew of this they could check RPO AR1 for "Less Head Restraint" until December 31, 1968 and receive a credit (744 reported). After January 1, the "Less Head Restraint" option was discontinued and the base price of all Chevelles magically increased by $17.00.

* Two special colors were available for any SS 396 optioned Chevelle; paint code 72 for Hugger/Monaco Orange and paint code 76 for Daytona Yellow. These special colors were still a $42.15 option. These two special colors were also available on COPO Chevelles.

* Numbers vary but it's generally accepted that 323 1969 Malibu sport coupes were special ordered with the RPO L72 427cid 425hp engines under Chevrolet's Central Office Production Order (COPO) system. See this page for more details.

* Late in 1969 the 396cid engine got a .030 bore to 402cid. The engine code changed with the 402 engine with the addition of the letter "C" in the first engine ID location. For example the "JA" engine code became "CJA."

* Paint codes changed from letters to numbers. Convertible and vinyl top codes changed from numbers to letters.

* "Astro Ventilation" was introduced on all sport coupes and Malibu convertibles which included a one-piece front driver and passenger window glass. All other body styles retained the vent window.

* Almost all 1969 396cid engines were equipped with GM's Air Injection Reactor (A.I.R.) emission system, the exception is the L35 with the TH400 automatic transmission that used the Controlled Combustion System (C.C.S.).
