Each year of Chevelles from 1964 through 1972 had unique oddities associated with them.

1964 | 1965 | 1966 | 1967 | 1968 | 1969 | 1970 | 1971 | 1972

→ 1971

* One major change to the body appearance is the change from dual headlamps to a single headlamp on each side. The front parking lamp moved from the bumper to the fender extensions. Tail lamps changed from the rectangular units of 1970 to two round lamps for 1971.

* The L34 402cid engine was dropped in favor of the LS3 version.

* 1971 saw a major change as far as the SS option goes. The two SS options of 1970 were reduced to one SS option, RPO Z15. The SS option included power front disc brakes, special 15x7 wheels, F60x15 white lettered blackwall tires, F41 suspension (except sedan pickups), a domed hood with hood pins, left-hand remote outside mirror and function symbols on instrument panel knobs along with SS badging. All SS optioned Malibu sport coupes and convertibles received the SS emblem on the door panel.

* For the first time since the 1965 Malibu SS series a small block V8 could be ordered with the SS option. The SS option required any "optional V8 and transmission" meaning no 307 and/or Powerglide SS. Both 350 engines (L48 and L65) and the 402 engine (LS3) could be ordered with or without the SS option. Only the LS5 454 engine required the SS option.

* While all other engine's horsepower ratings were being lowered the LS5 actually increased from 360hp in 1970 to 365hp. The LS6 engine was initially scheduled for 1971 but was dropped before production. According to Tonawanda engine plant records only 14 LS6 engines (10 for automatics and 4 for 4-speed) were built for 1971 but all found their way into test mules and demonstration units. There were 118 LS6 engines for Corvettes and all had aluminum cylinder heads and the Air Injection Reactor (A.I.R) emission controls.

* The rear bumper of the 1971 Chevelle changed enough that there was no longer room to put the black bumper pad used in 1970 and replaced it with a simple SS emblem.

* A new option, RPO YF3, was offered on the base Chevelle sport coupe known as a "Heavy Chevy." This was more of a dress-up option than an performance oriented one although the LS3 330hp Turbo-Jet 402 could be ordered. The option included a black accented grille like the SS, special side stripes, Heavy Chevy decals on the hood and trunk (causing the "Chevelle by Chevrolet" emblem to be removed), the same special domed hood with hood pins found on the SS, 14x6 rally wheels with bright lug nuts and center cap (but no beauty trim ring), and choice of black or white stripes - a black car would automatically get white stripes and a white car would automatically get black stripes. No changes were made to the interior and interior color and option choices remained the same as any base Chevelle sport coupe.

* The base Chevelle (134xx) name was changed once again from "Standard" to simply "Chevelle" for the sport coupe, 4-door sedan, and sedan pickup.
