Each year of Chevelles from 1964 through 1972 had unique oddities associated with them.

1964 | 1965 | 1966 | 1967 | 1968 | 1969 | 1970 | 1971 | 1972

→ 1968

* 1968 saw a completely new body style. The sport coupe body designation changed back to "37" with the new styling.

* The 2-door "sedan" (with B-pillar) name was changed to "coupe" for 1968. The 4-door "sedan" remained a "sedan." The body designation for the new "coupe" also changed to "27."

* The heavy duty RPO M22 transmission returned to the option list for 1968 (1,049 reported).

* The SS 396 series now included the sedan pickup with VIN starting with 13880. This is the only year for the SS 396 El Camino.

* The 283cid engine was replaced with a 307cid engine.

* A supplier of black interiors for all Chevelles that had black as an option went on strike around February or May of 1968. This forced Chevrolet to revert to black interiors for Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac to be used as substitute until the strike ended around June. See this page for details.

* There were no special paint colors reserved for the SS 396 series.

* "Rally wheels" were now an option for any Chevelle except station wagons under RPO ZJ7 (40,238 reported).

* Hub caps were standard on all Chevelles. Full wheel covers were optional under RPO PO1. When full wheel covers were ordered the centers differed for the SS 396 and the Concours station wagon, versus all other series.

* Three (actually four) Concours options were offered and should not be confused with the Concours station wagon series. RPO ZJ6 was used for the "Special Sport Sedan" through March when it was superseded by RPO ZK6. March also introduced a Concours option for the Malibu sport coupe (RPO ZK7) and Malibu 4-door sedan (RPO ZK5. These concours options included special body trim, more luxurious interiors, and extra sound deadening insulation. The same interiors that were part of the concours options were also used as substitute interiors during the supplier's strike noted above.

* The tachometer was no longer available as a separate option. A tachometer was part of the U14 Instrument Panel Gauges option and could be ordered with ANY V8 Malibu or SS 396 series Chevelle.

* The SS 396 series have the body area below the side trim painted black; Malibus with the same side trim are body color.
