Is My Chevelle a Malibu?

Each year of Chevelles from 1964 through 1972 had unique oddities associated with them. The model year similarities due to body style are typically broken down to 1964/1965, 1966/1967, 1968/1968, and 1970/1971/1972.

Let me begin with this, ALL MALIBUS ARE CHEVELLES, but not all Chevelles are Malibus. Each model year from 1964 through 1972 has a Malibu series, but other series as well - all are Chevelles.

I read this question on social media almost every day so let's clear some things up. The "Chevelle" is a model lineup from Chevrolet just like a "Tempest" is to Pontiac, "Skylark" is to Buick, "Cutlass" is to Oldsmobile.

I also see questions like, "Will a convertible rear seat fit my Chevelle?" Well, that depends. What year and body style is your "Chevelle?" Typically convertible seats are different from coupe and sport coupes.

Chevelles are offered in different series dependent on the particular model year. These series are generally trim levels such as "300," "300 Deluxe," "Malibu," and "SS 396." An upper tier series is NOT an option or package one orders on a lower tier series. For example, the Malibu is its own model, not an option or package available on a 300 Deluxe series. Generally, each model year and series had their own specific options available to them. Some options were offered in more than one series/body style in a given year, others were not. For example, from 1966 through 1972 bucket seats were optional on any Malibu series sport coupe, convertible, and sedan pickups; bucket seats were NOT an option on 300 Deluxe series Chevelles nor any 4-door sedan or station wagon body style regardless of series.

It is IMPORTANT to note that while these grouped years are similar in body style they can be vastly different in options and general layouts. For example while the 1966 and 1967 model years are similar in appearance, safety requirements for 1967 make many components not interchangeable with 1966 Chevelles. The same holds true for 1968 and 1969 Chevelles, do not be lulled into the false impression that your 1969 Chevelle can interchange a lot of parts with a 1968 Chevelle.

Check the links below for specifics on each model year (1964-1972) Chevelle to see what series and body styles were offered that year.
