Transmissions - 1967

The base transmission for all 1967 Chevelles was one of several 3-speed manual transmissions depending on the engine. All were column shifted except the heavy duty manual 3-speed in an SS 396; the SS 396 3-speed was floor shifted regardless of bench or bucket seat configuration.

SS396 3-speed

As you can see in the matrices below, several versions of the 2-speed Powerglide, the 3-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, and several versions of the manual 3-speed and manual 3-speed with overdrive transmissions were used based on the particular engine and its horsepower rating. The matrix represents the gear ratio multiplication factor based on the gear set in the transmission and the rear end axle ratio. The manual 4-speed transmission was available in three versions, a wide ratio aluminum Muncie M20, a close ratio M21 and heavy duty M22 - however, GM records indicate no M22 transmissions were sold in 1967 Chevelles.

Chevrolet introduced a new, light duty iron case Saginaw 4-speed for all applicable applications of V8 engines rated 300 hp and under. This transmission carried the same RPO number as the aluminum case Muncie 4-speed, RPO M20. GM's Accumulative Production Report does not differentiate between the Saginaw M20 and the Muncie M20. Additionally the Saginaw version of the M20 came in two ratio setups, one for the base 283 V8 and one for the 327 V8. Gear ratios for the base 283 are 3.11 2.20, 1.47, 1.00 and 3.11 for reverse while the gear ratios for the 327 are 2.54, 1.80, 1.44, 1.00, and 2.54.
