Interior Trim Codes - 1968

Disclaimer: Interior configurations may not be correct. Example photos are for seat type/color/material only. Due to lighting conditions, manner of photography, available aftermarket suppliers, etc. some colors may appear lighter or darker than they really are. While often seen on recovered bucket seats, there was not bright trim around the seat bottom. There were bright end caps that were often lost over time as shown here. Other GM A-body cars did have the bright trim and were considered "upscale." Those 1968 Chevelles with Buick, Oldsmobile, or Pontiac bucket seats will have the bright trim.

Several interior trim codes are not listed in Chevrolet's 1968 Trim Combination Chart and several are listed only for full size Chevrolet convertibles. What is shown here are codes that have been verified by Fisher Body Number plates.

Like all Chevelles the bright trim on the lower side panel of the bucket seat was not used. It was used on the upscale Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac bucket seats however. Since the aftermarket trim kits are the same, the bright trim on the lower side panel is included in the kits and many Chevelle owners will use them. Headrests for bucket seats (RPO A81) and bench seats (RPO A82) continued to be optional.

Many Chevelles were equipped with Buick interiors and are noted on the body plate with the Chevrolet trim number followed by the Buick trim number, e.g. 765-118, 765-158 & 765-168 black bench seat and 766-178 black bucket seat. Oldsmobile and Pontiac supplied seats as well with 765-980, 766-970 and even a 760-910 coded tag have been seen on Baltimore, Kansas City & Fremont built Chevelles with Oldsmobile alternative seats and 760-217 & 766-223 coded Pontiac seats. Generally these are found in April, May, & June time frames with the earliest found so far being 03E from Fremont (in a Malibu sport coupe) and the latest being 07C from Baltimore (in an Malibu sport coupe).

El Camino body styles were just as susceptible to getting these alternative interiors as well as sport coupes and convertibles. A Concours optioned Malibu is likely to have a Buick or Olds interior as well but only one documented Concours optioned Chevelle has presented itself to date, and it has an Olds interior code. These Buick/Oldsmobile/Pontiac coded tags have been found on Baltimore, Kansas City, and Fremont Chevelles so far. Why Atlanta and Framingham were not affected is a good question. Anyone with an Atlanta or Framingham Chevelle with a Buick, Oldsmobile or Pontiac coded interior is encouraged to contact me.

Correct original 1968 seats have matching color trim on the lower side panels (not chrome). The seats do have chrome vinyl/plastic trim surrounding the plastic back panel. The bucket seat backs are plastic and have provisions to lock the seat back on the outside of the seat backs.
