* Although there are 1968 Chevelles with body dates in August 1967, August and September totals are listed in September only. At least two August body date (08A) Chevelles have been reported with very late Baltimore sequence number - see (6) & (7) above.
Late model year production (7) above.
Early model year production (1) above.
Chevrolet's published figure for the 1968 model year are 464,669
units for U.S. assembly plants.
Canadian Classic Chevelles puts Canadian production totals at 26,118
for 1968.
A reported 363 Chevelles/Beaumonts were built in Port Elizabeth, South
Africa. Whether these units are included in Chevrolet's report is unknown.
A reported 1,656 Chevelles were built in Caracas, Venezuela. These units
are not included in Chevrolet's report.
It is also not known at this time how many Chevelles were built in Oshawa so the percentage figures shown may not be 100% accurate for the 5 U.S. plants. The total production figures for Chevelles did include Oshawa but no breakdown of Oshawa vs. U.S. are given. From Vintage Vehicle Services documents It is known that 1,161 13837 SS 396 sport coupes were built in Oshawa.
Oshawa built 108 SS 396 convertibles for sale by Canadian dealers.
Please contact Canadian Classic Chevelles for more information on Canada production.
Calendar Weeks for calendar year 1968
Based from January 1 through December 31
Caveats and Disclaimers:
The numbers shown are reported last VINs from each plant per month. The numbers shown in red are instances of matching VIN and Fisher Body plates that show VINs/body dates outside the published numbers. The Fisher Body Number plate build week not match the calendar week; meaning an example body date of 04A may not be the first physical or even calendar week of April. Productions are scheduled well in advance of actual build date and given it takes 3 to 4 days to physically build the car once it is scheduled, you can see where the body date will not always match up with the VIN sequence. Obviously the body plates, and the associated information, are stamped when the cars are scheduled, not as they roll by a particular station. Cars with 04A body dates may run into week 04B of production. GM wouldn't just toss out the existing body number plates with 04A just because the car didn't physically get completed until the following week. In reality, don't place too much emphasis on the body date as opposed to the last reported VIN for a given month. The anomalies shown are shown for that very reason. It does happen and that should not be a basis for worry that your car may have had the body plate (trim tag) and/or VIN altered. If you have trim tags/VINs plates with dates and sequence numbers that don't fall into the range of those shown below, please email me the trim tag and sequence number and I'll post the oddity. Email it to me via my contact page.
Instances where body dates & VIN sequence numbers do not fall
into the 'correct' month.
1 - Although there were no reported sequence numbers for the end of
August, I show an August 5th week tag and the sequence number of 101251
indicating there were units built at Fremont in August.
2 - Fremont - Note body date of 07A yet VIN sequence falls 135 units
in the June time frame.
3 - Kansas City - Note body date of 02E yet VIN falls 1,390 units in
the March time frame.
4 - Baltimore - Note body date of 11A yet VIN falls 54 units in the
October time frame.
5 - Kansas City - Note body date of 03D yet VIN falls 381 units into
the April time frame.
6 - Baltimore - This car has a body date of 08A and POP indicating an
August built month but sequence falls within the July time frame.
7 - Baltimore - This car has a body date of 08A indicating an August
built month but sequence falls within the July time frame.
8 - Atlanta - This car has body date of 02C indicating a mid-to-late
February build but sequence falls within the March time frame.
9 - Fremont - This car has body date of 02B yet VIN falls in late January
by 130 units.
