Of the five engine sizes offered, three were noted by size designations above or included in the emblem on the front fender, the 250 cid L6 Turbo-Thrift, the 327 cid V8 Turbo-Fire, and the 396 cid V8 Turbo-Jet.
The base 230 cid L6 did not include a fender emblem but, as shown below, the optional 250 cid L6 did.
The 283 cid V8 and the 327 cid V8 shared the same 'crossed flags' but the 327 engine included the "327" numerals centered above the flags.
All 396 cid V8 engines (325hp, 350hp, and 375hp) received the same front fender emblem.

According to sources there are at least five versions of this emblem
for Chevelles:
1 - 1965 factory installed - The flag is blood red. The outer groove
around the lower bars ("396" and "Turbo-Jet") was painted black. The
studs are just a tick under 3/4" long.
2 - 1966 - early 1967 factory installed - The flag is blood red. The
outer groove around the lower bars ("396" and "Turbo-Jet") was NOT
painted black, but was bare chrome. The studs are just a tick under
3/4" long.
3 - Mid 1967 (exact changeover date unknown) factory installed - The
flag is orange. The outer groove around the lower bars ("396" and
"Turbo-Jet") was NOT painted black, but was bare chrome. The studs
are just a tick under 3/4" long.
4 - Late 1967 (exact changeover date unknown) factory installed, and
service replacements for a couple years afterwards - The flag is
orange. The outer groove around the lower bars ("396" and
"Turbo-Jet") was NOT painted black, but was bare chrome. The studs
are just a tick under 1/2" long.
5 - Later service replacements - The flag is a sort of translucent
or transparent red. The outer groove around the lower bars ("396"
and "Turbo-Jet") was NOT painted black, but was bare chrome. The
studs are just a tick under 1/2" long.
6 - Most aftermarket third-party vendors sell the 1965 version based
on the original graphics design for part.

Compare the 300 rear quarter panel emblem above with the 300 Deluxe
emblems below.
The 300 Deluxe moved the "300" script to the top of the emblem.

Yes, there really is a 1967 Malibu SS model, only it was built exclusively
in Canada.
