The convertible returned in 1968, the first since 1975. The 1986
Corvette was the pace car for the Indianapolis 500. All convertibles
sold were designated as pace car replicas and all included decal packages
for dealer or owner installation.
Cracking abound the head attachment bosses required an introduction delay for revisions to the aluminum cylinder heads. The heads were ready in time for convertible production an all 1986 convertibles and late production coupes were equipped with aluminum heads.
Center mounted brake lights were added in 1986 to confirm to federal requirements. The coupe's was mounted above the rear window where the convertible's was mounted in the rear facia.
The wheels were slightly revised with the center section having a natural finish instead of black as they had been in 1984 and 1985.

Ten new colors added for 1986: Yellow (code 35), Copper Metallic (code 66), Medium Brown Metallic (code 69), Dark Red Metallic (code 81), Silver Metallic/Medium Gray Metallic (code 13/18), Medium Gray Metallic/Black (code 18/41), White/Silver Metallic (code 40/13), Silver Beige/Medium Dark Brown (code 59/69), and a special Silver Beige/Black for the 50 Malcom Konner Commemorative Edition.
Gone from 1985 were 5 colors: Medium Blue Metallic (code 23), Light Bronze Metallic (code 63), Light Blue/Medium Blue (code 20/23), Light Bronze/Dark Bronze (code 63/66), and Silver/Gray (code 13/16).
