The new base engine for 1992 was the LT1 that was rated at 300hp (net) at 5000 RPM and torque of 330 lb.-ft. at 4000 RPM. The redline was upped to 5700 RPM, 700 RPM higher than the earlier L98 and featured an automatic fuel cutoff at 5850 RPM. The increase in horsepower was attained by a computer-controlled ignition timing system, a low-restriction exhaust system employing two catalytic converters and two oxygen sensors with one converter and one sensor for each bank of cylinders, and a new multiport fuel injection system that replaced the previous tuned port injection.

The new LT1 engine employed reverse flow cooling, a Chevrolet first. Instead of routing the coolant from the water pump through the engine block to the heads, the LT1 routed coolant to the heads first. This permitted higher bore temperatures, reduced ring friction, and helped cooling around the valve seats and spark plug bosses.

Synthetic engine oil was recommended for the LT1 and an engine oil cooler was not longer offered, thought to be unnecessary when synthetic oil was used.

Little was changed in the exterior appearance. For the AR-1, "ZR-1" emblems were added above the side fender vents. Two rectangular exhaust outlets were used for ZR-1s and for standard models.

Instrument face plates and buttons were changed to all-black, replacing 1990-1991's gray-black. The digital speedometer was relocated above the fuel gauge. The instrument panel "upshift" light was removed.

Traction control was standard equipment on all 1982 models. Called "Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR)", the system was created by Bosch and developed in cooperation with Corvette engineers. It was engaged automatically with the ignition, but could be turned off by an instrument panel switch. ASR used engine spark retard, throttle close down, and brake intervention to limit wheel spin. When ASR was turned on, the driver could feel a slight accelerator pedal pushback.

New Goodyear GS-C tires were introduced and were exclusive to Corvettes worldwide. The GS-C tread design was both directional and asymmetrical.

Three new colors were added: Bright Aqua Metallic (code 43), Medium Green Metallic (code 45), and Black Rose Metallic (code 73). Gone from 1991 were five colors: Steel Blue Metallic, Turquoise Metallic, Quasar Blue Metallic, Polo Green Metallic, and Charcoal Metallic.
