The 6-slot,16x8.5-inch wheel was discontinued for 1989 and
replaced with a 12-slot, 17x9.5-inch wheel from the 1988 ZR-1 and
Z52 options became standard for 1989.
On April 19, 1989, Chevrolet advised dealers that the ZR-1 would be a 1990 model, not a late-release 1989 due to "insufficient availability of engines." About 100 1989 ZR-1 Corvettes were built for evaluation, testing, and media preview and photography, but none were release for public sale.
Seats were restyled, but the three choices of cloth, optional leather, or optional sport leather continued. Due to weight and fuel economy concerns, Chevrolet intentionally limited sales of the sport leather seats by making them available exclusively with Z51-optioned models.
No new colors were added for 1989 with the exception of the code for White changed from 40 to 10.
Arctic Pearl wasn't a regular production color but 27 were built
under RPO 31U and all but five were ZR-1 optioned.
Gone from 1988 were 2 colors: Yellow (code 35) and the coupe only White/Black (code 40/41).
