1990 Corvette Trivia

New, Standard items for 1990

Seats, instrument panel, console, cluster door trim, and steering wheel.
Engine oil cooler is now standard.
New cooling system negating the need for a heavy-duty cooling option.
New, lighter weight 17x9.5-inch wheels.
Low Oil Sensor signals "Low Oil" on the information panel if level drops significantly.
Engine Oil Life Monitor signals when an oil change is needed.

The much anticipated ZR-1 finally arrived for 1990. The LT5 engine has the same basic configuration al the L98 350 engine but was a new design with four overhead camshafts and 32 valves. The LS5 engines were built at Mercury Marine in Stillwater, Oklahoma then shipped to Bowling Green for vehicle assembly. Chevrolet service departments returned the LT5 engines to Mercury Marine if repairs were needed. The customer had the choice of a replacement engine or the return of their original engine if it was repairable.

An air intake speed density control system, camshaft revision, and compression ration increase added 5hp to base engines, up from 240hp to 245hp except coupes with 3.07:1 or 3.33:1 axle ratios which increase the horsepower rating from 245hp to 250hp because of their less restrictive exhaust systems.

An engine oil life monitor calculated useful oil life base on engine temperature and revolutions. An instrument panel display alerted the drive when an oil change was recommended.

The heavy-duty radiator, RPO V01, and boost fan, RPO B4P, were dropped in 1990 due to a more efficient sloped-back radiator design.

The instrument panel was redesigned combining the speedometer with an analog tachometer and secondary gauges.
