Just for fun...Daily Production
1965 Atlanta Baltimore Fremont Framingham Kansas City

The total production figures above are for Chevelles are for U.S. and domestic export.

Canada figures for 1965 are reported at either 19,132 or 14,883 units depending on the source of the information. Of these built in Canada, a Canada-only model 131/13267 300 convertible, it is reported that 309 of these were built. Those 309 consist of 109 with a V-8 engine and 205 were with an L6 engine. Canadian Classic Chevelles reports there were 14,883 1965 Chevelles assembled in Canada.

Looking at the 08A (August, 1st week) and 08C (August, 3rd week) tags above, one's first thought is they're both August of 1964. Not so. The top SS convertible tag shows very low SS convertible body number (#23) plus sequence number (#100230) indicates very early August of 1964. The second SS sport coupe tag shows a very high SS sport coupe body number plus sequence number (#187999) indicates very late August of 1965.

  • (1) Strike period - no units reportedly built. Kansas City appears to be the only plant in production during October.

  • (2) Chevrolet's published figure for the 1965 model year is 378,618 units. Subtracting the total of last reported VINs of each plant (375,678) from the published figure leaves 2,940 unaccounted for. (One source puts the Canadian production total at 19,132 (while Canadian Classic Chevelles & Beaumonts says 14,883.) A reported 1,927 Chevelles/Beaumonts were built in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Caveats and Disclaimers:

The numbers shown are reported last VINs from each plant per month. The numbers shown in red are instances of matching VIN and Fisher Body plates that show VINs/body dates outside the published numbers. The Fisher Body Number plate build week not match the calendar week; meaning an example body date of 04A may not be the first physical or even calendar week of April. Productions are scheduled well in advance of actual build date and given it takes 3 to 4 days to physically build the car once it is scheduled, you can see where the body date will not always match up with the VIN sequence. Obviously the body plates, and the associated information, are stamped when the cars are scheduled, not as they roll by a particular station. Cars with 04A body dates may run into week 04B of production. GM wouldn't just toss out the existing body number plates with 04A just because the car didn't physically get completed until the following week. In reality, don't place too much emphasis on the body date as opposed to the last reported VIN for a given month. The anomalies shown are shown for that very reason. It does happen and that should not be a basis for worry that your car may have had the body plate (trim tag) and/or VIN altered. If you have trim tags/VINs plates with dates and sequence numbers that don't fall into the range of those shown below, please email me the trim tag and sequence number and I'll post the oddity. Email it to me via my contact page.
